Code of Expectations for a Chaplain in State Schools
The Chaplain is expected to be a safe, professional Christian presence in a school and are expected to:
1. Recognise that they represent the wider Christian Community
2. Respect the variety of beliefs represented in the school.
Christian convictions may be affirmed without denying the genuineness of the experience of others
3. Familiarise themselves with school policies and the pastoral care network within the
school and in the wider community.
Seek help or advice from the appropriate person when necessary
4. Be available as an independent person who understands the school system but remains
separate from its management and discipline system and can be used in a role of mediation
5. Respect the needs, rights and obligations of all those with whom they work.
Understand the implications of the Privacy Act (1993), the Human Rights Act (1993) and the Children,
Young Persons and their Families Act (1989) as they may apply to Chaplains
6. Remain at all times loyal to the school and maintain confidentiality and pupil trust unless there is a clear issue of safety
7. Recognise and accept his/her dual responsibility to the churches and the school, through the Principal.
Also accept and act in accordance with the school’s policies, while using initiative and individual skills to serve the school. This may include making arrangements for historical celebrations such as Easter and Christmas
8. Liaise and communicate regularly with the Principal.
Participate in regular liaison with the CEC representative and have supervision with a suitably qualified and approved person
9. Continue to be available for on-going training that better equips them for the Chaplaincy role
