Introducing Rod Thompson - Canterbury

Rod.Thompson.150wide

New CRE Advisor for Canterbury

I have been a primary school teacher and principal for most of my working life. I’m now working part-time for the Rangiora Baptist Church and part-time for CEC, as well as fitting in a little bit of relief teaching. I’m also a chaplain at Woodend School.

CEC is New Zealand’s largest ‘mission’ organisation, reaching more children weekly than all the churches combined. We have a wonderful opportunity to reach those unaffected by the gospel, and it’s important that we do it well.  I’ve joined the team because I want to be part of what CEC is doing and because I strongly believe that children are our biggest and most important mission-field.

I would like to thank everyone for the work you are doing. It’s important. I’m here to help you in any way I can.

Greetings friends,

You will see from the masthead above just when I embarked upon designing this newsletter for you. I hope it reaches you before the trees are bare however my aim is to send you news and articles that are informative, motivating and inspiring. Please do contact me with stories from the 'coal-face' and words of encouragement to be included in future copies.

Thank you Teachers for your work in preparing and presenting your lessons thus far. Thank you Team Leaders for organising and encouraging your teams, responding to our annual survey and ensuring the smooth running of the programme in your school(s). Thank you Helpers and Relievers for your invaluable support. Thank you Chaplains for your care and wisdom in helping the children and their families in the schools where you are placed.

It has been encouraging to me to meet up with many of you and to see your willingness to embrace new ideas as we seek to ensure schools view our programme as relevant and engaging.

Upper South Island - Canterbury Review

Qualities of leadership document

A good start to any conference it to arrive on time,at the wrong location. And of course that is where you meet your other likeminded attendees! Having met and greeted without the usual name badges it was a wonderful start to me, a chaplain- in - waiting who felt a little out of my league to say the least. The continual coffee aside, this conference bubbled with enthusiasm and encouragement.

The speakers both in the main conference and for the chaplaincy workshops were passionate aout their topics from Denise Torrie to Mike Dodge, we were encouraged and empowered to get out there and be a beacon for Christ. The Principals who shared with us sung the praises of their CRE teachers, and chaplains. Their heartfrelt crying out for more schools to enter into a prgram of chaplaincy struck at the heart of the passionate need in our communities in NZ for direction for our famillies.

So full of enthusiam and incredibly encouraged I joined a group of people for the final dinner after Paul Young inspired me with his talk and Petrea with her enthusiasm and motivation, it was concluded that yes we needed two days, a head rush of information, and yes so much to learn from each other. I wandered off home feeling it a pleasure and honour to be part of the CEC programme. Inspired even... thanks to you all.
